Position Overview
The VP, Finance and Administration will own NuEnergy.ai’s financial health and the administrative systems that keep the company running, from planning and reporting through to payroll, contracts and compliance. This role is ideal for a hands-on finance leader who is as comfortable doing the work as setting the direction: building the model, closing the books and fixing the process, not only overseeing it. You will partner with the CEO on strategy and fundraising, support the board with clear and timely reporting, and work with Sales, Program Delivery and Product to make sure growth is well planned and well governed.
Key Responsibilities
Financial strategy and planning
- Lead annual budgeting, multi-year financial planning and rolling forecasts, linked to company strategy and growth plans
- Manage cash flow, runway and working capital, and give the CEO early visibility of risks and options
- Build and maintain financial models to support pricing, new offerings, hiring plans and investment decisions
Accounting, reporting and controls
- Own month-end and year-end close, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements
- Prepare monthly management reports and board-ready financial packages with clear commentary
- Lead the annual review or audit engagement with external accountants
- Design and maintain internal controls, approval authorities and finance policies suited to a growing company
Tax, funding and compliance
- Oversee corporate tax, GST/HST, payroll remittances and other federal and provincial filings, working with external advisors
- Manage government funding and tax credit programs, including SR&ED and IRAP, from application through claims and reporting
- Ensure compliance with funding agreements, contract terms and statutory obligations
Fundraising and investor relations
- Support the CEO on fundraising, including financial models, data rooms, due diligence and investor reporting
- Maintain the cap table and corporate records in coordination with legal counsel
- Manage banking, credit and insurance relationships
Administration and people operations
- Oversee payroll, benefits administration and HR policies, ensuring compliance with Ontario employment standards and other applicable legislation for a team of both full-time and part-time employees and contractors that is distributed across Canada and the United States
- Manage contracts administration, including customer, vendor and contractor agreements, in coordination with legal counsel
- Support public-sector procurement requirements, including bid financials, vendor registrations and security clearance processes
- Oversee office, IT and vendor administration, and select and improve the finance and administrative tools the company relies on.
Leadership and collaboration
- Work with cross-functional teams (Sales, Product Management, Software Development, Program Delivery) to support pricing, proposals, resourcing and delivery margins
- Provide regular updates to leadership and the board on financial performance, risks and progress
- Build a working understanding of AI governance and NuEnergy.ai’s offerings, so finance decisions reflect how the business creates value
- Contribute to fostering a collaborative and results-oriented team culture, consistent with NuEnergy.ai’s values of trust, transparency, and principled, ethical AI
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or Business Administration, or a related field
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing
- Minimum 10+ years of progressive experience in finance, accounting and administration, including at least 5 years in a senior finance leadership role (Controller, Director of Finance, VP Finance or equivalent)
- Hands-on experience owning the full accounting cycle, budgeting, forecasting and cash management in a growing organization
- Working knowledge of Canadian tax, payroll and employment standards, and of ASPE and/or IFRS
- A proven track record of execution: building processes from the ground up, delivering on deadlines and following through with minimal direction
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, the board and investors
- High integrity and sound judgement in handling confidential information
- Ability to work constructively in an office team environment, as well as a virtual team environment
- Ability to travel as needed
- Willing to obtain Government of Canada security clearance and background check
- We’re a bring-your-own-device team, so you’ll use your own laptop and cellphone for work.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or other graduate degree in finance or business
- Experience in a technology, SaaS or professional services company, ideally at start-up or scale-up stage
- Experience with SR&ED, IRAP and other government funding programs
- Experience supporting equity or debt fundraising, board reporting and investor relations
- Experience with government or public-sector contracts and procurement
- Experience with US operations, including cross-border tax and payroll
- Experience implementing or improving cloud accounting, payroll and expense management systems
